A24 is an independent film studio that has distributed an abundance of critically acclaimed low budget films over the past few years and all of them are now on Kanopy. These include coming-of-age dramas such as “Eighth Grade,” Oscar-nominated “Lady Bird” and best picture winner “Moonlight.” A24 has also provided Kanopy with its often time divisive horror films such as “Hereditary,” “Under the Skin” and “The Witch.” Other acclaimed films from A24 on Kanopy include the science fiction film “Ex Machina” and the drama “Room.”
Kanopy also has classic films, most of them from the Criterion Collection. These include the work of influential Japanese director Akira Kurosawa such as “Seven Samurai,” “Rashomon” and “Throne of Blood.” Students can watch the films of Charlie Chaplin, including “The Great Dictator” and “Modern Times.” Other classic films on Kanopy include the vampire film “Nosferatu,” John Wayne western “Stagecoach,” mystery-comedy “Charade” and many more.
If narrative films are not your thing, there are plenty of documentaries to educate you. There is the Oscar-nominated “I Am Not Your Negro,” which is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson and explores the history of racism in America. Another Oscar-nominated documentary is “Super Size Me,” which follows the documentary’s director as he eats nothing but McDonalds for a month. Another critically acclaimed documentary is “Amy,” the life story of singer Amy Winehouse and her tragic fate.
